Future-proofing the hobby of video games.

I really want this to be seen as an effort to preserve and extend the hobby of collecting video games as well as playing video games.

Where it started

The first consoles

My first console was one of the cassette ones. It was so long ago I don't exactly remember which one it was.

The first real console that I remember asking my parents to buy for me, specifically with the name, was the PS2. The first games I played on it were XIII and Freedom Fighters, and then the third one was Need for Speed Underground 2.

The PS3

I care, genuinely and slightly ridiculously, about how hugging a fat 60GB backwards compatible PS3 makes me feel. Like hugging a friend from childhood. That is the actual reason. Everything commercial here exists so that reason can keep going.

It might not have been the first console that I had as a child, but it was the most difficult one I had to convince my parents for. It was super expensive when it came out and it was a huge jump from the PS2. I think I was 13 when I got it, and the first game I played on it was MotorStorm. I still like MotorStorm.

Years later

As I grew older I found myself in situations where I had less and less time to play games, but more and more time and a little bit of money to actually buy them. That was something I was not able to do when I was growing up.

What this is for

My version of this collection is built around a community. It's accessible to people, not for playing in their homes but as a physical location where they could go and see the collection. It's a museum, but more of a museum in the sense that they are able to interact with the games. They can play them, touch them, feel the games and the consoles and the accessories.

It's not something that I want to own perpetually. It's something that I want to do for the community, for the hobby of video game preservation, collection and playing.
I'm not the only one doing this. I'm not even the most renowned. There are a lot of people with really good, really big collections.
I have a modest collection, but I think I sort of equal them in passion.
Most of us will probably never finish our backlogs, but that's okay. There are a lot of games that I enjoy owning but not particularly enjoy playing.

How it's paid for

Right now I am doing it myself, with whatever finances I can invest in it. This is a passion project. I'm not sure at this time how concretely it's going to make money.

Come along

I am absolutely looking forward to working with whoever is interested in participating in this mission, this journey and this hobby. It's a community. It's people. I love this aspect of my hobby, and this is my primary hobby. It's my passion.

If you want to look at what's on the shelves, the collection is right here. If you'd like to write for the magazine, tell us about it.
