Overview

Colin McRae: Dirt 2, known outside Europe as Dirt 2, is a racing game developed and published by Codemasters in 2009. It came out first for the Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Wii and Xbox 360, and later for Windows and Mac. It is the sequel to Colin McRae: Dirt, the first game in the series since McRae's death in 2007 and the last to carry his name in the title.

It features Ken Block, Travis Pastrana, Tanner Foust, Dave Mirra and Mohammed Ben Sulayem, and takes place across Asia, Europe, Africa and North America. An RV travels from event to event and acts as your headquarters. There are five racing disciplines, rally, rallycross, trailblazer, raid and landrush, plus three special modes: Gatecrasher, Domination and Last Man Standing.

Multiplayer runs over the PlayStation Network and locally. Up to eight players can race in ranked Pro Tour matches or unranked Jam Session matches. In Jam Session any class of car can be used on any track, while ranked matches keep to the prescribed cars.

The game runs on an updated version of the EGO engine, first used for Race Driver: Grid. The physics model was reworked to show weight transfer, which allows techniques such as the Scandinavian flick. The Flashback rewind feature from Grid was kept. Ken Block consulted on the handling during development, and the cars were given more grip after he played an early build.

Codemasters said in February 2009 that it would release several small DLC packs after launch. In the end there were only two small items that work like cheat codes, Trust Fund and Access All Areas. A demo came out on the PlayStation Store on 20 August 2009.

The PS3, Xbox 360 and PC versions got positive reviews, with Metacritic scores of 87 for the two consoles and 89 for PC. IGN gave 8.4 out of 10 in the US and 9 out of 10 in the UK, and Eurogamer gave 8 out of 10. Famitsu scored the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions 35 out of 40. The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences nominated it for Racing Game of the Year.

Notes for collectors

  • The box is titled Colin McRae: DiRT 2 in Europe and DiRT 2 in North America. Sony's patch manifests use the same two names.
  • It is the last Dirt game with Colin McRae's name in the title. McRae died in 2007.
  • The European cover shows Ken Block's Subaru Impreza WRX STI.
  • Trust Fund and Access All Areas were the only two DLC items released, and both unlock content that is otherwise earned.
  • The trophy list has 48 trophies and 1,350 points, and several of them need online play, such as winning Pro Tour races and reaching Online Fame Level 30.
  • A demo was released on the PlayStation Store on 20 August 2009.
