DmC Devil May Cry

Overview

DmC: Devil May Cry is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Ninja Theory and published by Capcom. It is set in a separate continuity from the earlier Devil May Cry games. The story takes place in Limbo City, a modern city secretly run by demons, and follows the young demon hunter Dante, whose twin brother Vergil recruits him to defeat the demon king Mundus.

It is a third-person hack and slash. Dante fights with his sword Rebellion and his pistols Ebony and Ivory, strings together combos and gets ranked on style. The game drops the manual lock-on of the older games and tracks enemies automatically. New to the series are Angel and Devil modes: Angel mode brings a fast scythe and Devil mode a slow, heavy axe, and both help with grappling and platforming. The game has 20 missions and three difficulty levels, with harder ones unlocked after the first clear.

Capcom wanted a reboot to widen the series' appeal after Devil May Cry 4 and chose Ninja Theory after its work on Heavenly Sword. Tameem Antoniades directed, Alex Garland was narrative consultant and Hideaki Itsuno supervised. At Capcom's request Dante was redesigned from scratch in a more Hollywood style, and the setting of Limbo City was inspired by Genoa and Barcelona. The soundtrack came from Noisia and Combichrist.

The reveal at Tokyo Game Show in September 2010 got a negative response from fans, and the team received death threats. The game came out for PS3 and Xbox 360 on January 15, 2013, with a Windows version on January 25 made by QLOC. Reviews were mostly favourable: Metacritic scores were 85 for PS3, 86 for Xbox 360 and 85 for PC, and the game was nominated for Action Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards.

A costume pack arrived a few days after the Windows release, and the free Bloody Palace survival mode followed on February 20, 2013. Vergil's Downfall, a paid campaign starring Vergil with its own leaderboard and trophies, was released on March 5, 2013 and was free for PS3 and Xbox 360 pre-orders. A Definitive Edition with all the DLC came to PS4 and Xbox One on March 17, 2015.

Capcom first hoped to ship two million copies by the end of its fiscal year, then lowered that to 1.2 million. The game sold 116,000 copies in its first week in Japan and topped the UK charts, though at about a third of the sales of Devil May Cry 4. It reached 4.4 million copies by March 2024, short of Capcom's first hopes.

Notes for collectors

• Vergil's Downfall was free for PS3 and Xbox 360 players who pre-ordered the game.
• The trophy list includes the Vergil's Downfall trophies, so the full list needs that DLC.
• The Windows version was made by QLOC, not Ninja Theory.
• The Definitive Edition on PS4 and Xbox One added Turbo Mode, a Vergil Bloody Palace, new costumes and updated trophies.
• Devil May Cry 5 in 2019 returned to the original series continuity rather than continuing the DmC one.
