Overview

Dungeon Siege III is an action role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Square Enix for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows in June 2011. It is the third full and fifth overall release in the Dungeon Siege series and the first since Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony in 2006. It is set in the kingdom of Ehb, 150 years after the first game, and follows descendants of survivors of the 10th Legion as they try to rebuild their military force.

You play one of four set characters: Lucas Montbarron, Anjali, Reinhart Manx or Katarina. The other three are non-player characters, and one of them travels with you at a time. You can swap the companion whenever you like. Each character has two fighting stances, special abilities that use focus, and nine unique sets of gear. There is no point-and-click control: you steer the character and aim by facing enemies. The game loads scenes in the background, so it has almost no load screens.

On the console versions a second player can take over the companion on the same console. Up to four players can also play the campaign together online. Players can join and leave at any time, and only the host's progress is saved. Everyone votes on quests and story decisions, using a dialogue wheel in the style of the Mass Effect games.

The story starts when the meeting place of the Legion's descendants is attacked by the mercenaries of Jeyne Kassynder. You help the Legion reopen its chapter-house in Stonebridge, win the support of Queen Roslyn and the city, and finally attack Kassynder's capital. Your choices decide what happens to Jeyne and are summed up at the end by the narrator, Odo.

Square Enix bought the Dungeon Siege rights from Gas Powered Games in 2010 and commissioned Obsidian, whose earlier work included Neverwinter Nights 2 and Fallout: New Vegas. Chris Taylor, who created the series, advised. It is the first main entry not made by Gas Powered Games and the first to appear on consoles. Obsidian built it on its own Onyx engine. The release was pushed back from May 27, 2011 to mid-June 2011.

Critics gave it mixed or average reviews. They liked the combat, the skill system, the look of the characters and gear, and how well the computer-controlled companion plays. They were less happy with the story, the short length, the loot menus and the limits on co-op. An expansion, Treasures of the Sun, came out on October 25, 2011 and adds a new desert area, new enemies, three perks and a level cap of 35.

Notes for collectors

  • It was meant to ship on May 27, 2011 and was delayed to June.
  • Only one companion can travel with you at a time, unlike the earlier Dungeon Siege games, where a whole party could be on screen.
  • Each character has nine sets of gear that no other character can use, apart from rings.
  • There are no health potions. Characters heal through abilities instead.
  • Four-player co-op only saves progress for the host, so a friend who joins does not keep their loot or quest progress.
  • Trophies include four-player party trophies, so the Platinum needs other players, and a main quest trophy for each of the four characters.
  • The Japanese release came more than a month after North America, on July 28, 2011.
