Overview

FIFA 13 is a football simulation game developed by EA Canada and published by Electronic Arts under the EA Sports label. It came out in late September 2012 in most regions, with the Japanese release in October. It was the first game in the series to use PlayStation Move on PlayStation 3 and Kinect on Xbox 360, and the only FIFA released on Wii U, where it was a launch title.

Its new features include First Touch Control and new celebrations. Career mode was updated so that you can manage an international team as well as a club, and transfers allow counter-offers and player-plus-cash deals. Seasons mode puts you in an online league system against players of a similar skill level, with ten matches per season and a points target for promotion.

FIFA Ultimate Team is part of the game. You build a team of real players from cards that you get from packs or buy from other players at the auction house, in bronze, silver and gold tiers, and use it in tournaments and divisions online. The game has 30 leagues, 46 national teams and 26 stadiums. Barcelona's Camp Nou is replaced by a generic stadium because EA could not agree a license with the club.

Lionel Messi is on the North American cover, with St James' Park in Newcastle in the background. It was the first time since FIFA Soccer 2003 that the North American version had a single cover athlete. EA also offered downloadable Major League Soccer covers. A demo came out on September 11, 2012 and was downloaded a record 1.99 million times in three days.

FIFA 13 was well received by critics and won Sports Game of the Year at the 16th D.I.C.E. Awards. Reviewers liked the new skill games and the fixes to problems from the previous year, though they said that Career mode felt forced and that the game did not change enough from FIFA 12. The Wii, Vita and 3DS versions were reviewed more harshly.

It sold 1.23 million units in the United Kingdom in 48 hours and 4.5 million copies worldwide in five days. EA called it the biggest video game launch of 2012 and the biggest sports game launch of all time. Sales reached 14.5 million copies by May 2013.

Notes for collectors

• The Wii U version is the only FIFA released on that console, and it was a launch title.
• On PlayStation 3 it supports PlayStation Move.
• Camp Nou does not appear because EA could not reach a license with the club, so a generic stadium called El Libertador is used instead.
• The Saudi Professional League is in the game for the first time in the series, and India, Bolivia and Venezuela returned to the international teams. Croatia was removed for lack of a license.
• The demo was released on September 11, 2012 with Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, Juventus, A.C. Milan and Arsenal playable.
• Many of the trophies are for online modes such as Ultimate Team, Seasons and Online Pro, so the Platinum, Football Legend, needs working online services.
