Overview

Fallout 3 is a 2008 action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It is set in the Washington metropolitan area 200 years after a devastating nuclear war. The player controls a 19-year-old who leaves a fallout shelter in search of their missing father.

It plays from a first-person or third-person view in an open world the player can explore freely. Combat can run in real time or be paused with the V.A.T.S. targeting system, which lets the player pick body parts to aim at, paid for with Action Points. The player builds a character with the seven S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes and thirteen skills, picks a perk at each level, and carries a wearable computer called the Pip-Boy 3000 for menus, maps and radio. A karma system tracks good and bad actions, and it changes how characters treat the player and which companions will join.

Fallout 3 is the third major game in the Fallout series and the first made by Bethesda after it bought the rights from Interplay Entertainment. Development began in late 2004 with a small team of about ten people and grew to around 75. Lead designer and writer Emil Pagliarulo wanted the bleak mood of the first Fallout, and executive producer Todd Howard wanted combat that mixed real-time and turn-based play, which led to V.A.T.S. Inon Zur wrote the score, and in-game radio stations play songs from the 1940s and 1950s. More than 40,000 lines of dialogue were recorded, a Guinness World Record at the time, with voice work from Liam Neeson and Malcolm McDowell.

It was released on October 28, 2008 in North America and in Europe at the end of that month. It sold 4.7 million copies in its first week. Some versions were censored: Australia refused classification until morphine was swapped for a generic drug, the Japanese version changed a quest about detonating a nuclear bomb, and blood and gore were reduced in the German version.

Five add-ons followed: Operation: Anchorage, The Pitt, Broken Steel, Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta. They came to PlayStation 3 months after Xbox 360, in September and October 2009. The Game of the Year Edition, released on October 13, 2009, packs the game with all five.

Critics praised the open-ended play and flexible character levelling, and the game won a number of Game of the Year awards. Metacritic gave the PlayStation 3 version 90 out of 100. Common complaints were bugs, stiff animation and weak AI. Estimates put sales at about 12.4 million by 2015. Fallout: New Vegas, a spin-off by Obsidian Entertainment, followed in 2010.

Notes for collectors

  • The Game of the Year Edition came out in North America on October 13, 2009, a few weeks after the add-ons reached PS3.
  • The Platinum asks for the other 50 base game trophies only. The 22 trophies in the five add-on packs sit outside it.
  • At levels 8, 14 and 20 there is one trophy each for bad, neutral and good karma, and Broken Steel adds the same for level 30.
  • The PS3 add-ons arrived months after the Xbox 360 ones. A PS3 update in September 2009 added trophy support for them.
  • The Australian version swapped morphine for a generic drug, and Bethesda changed every version of the game to match.
  • The Japanese version changed a quest about setting off a nuclear bomb in a town so that it cannot be detonated.
  • Sony lists two European disc IDs for the Game of the Year Edition.
