Overview

Fallout: New Vegas is a 2010 action role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It is set in the Mojave Desert 204 years after a nuclear war. The player is a courier who survives being shot in the head and gets pulled into a fight between factions over Hoover Dam and the region.

It plays from a first-person or third-person view in an open world. Combat can be paused with the V.A.T.S. targeting system, and the player carries a Pip-Boy 3000 for menus, maps and radio. Dialogue works through conversation trees, and the player's choices shape a reputation with each faction. Compared with Fallout 3 it adds iron sights on guns, item crafting, and an optional Hardcore Mode that adds survival needs.

After Fallout 3 shipped in 2008, Bethesda hired Obsidian to make a spin-off. Obsidian picked Las Vegas and the Mojave because they fit the 1950s look of the series and the Mad Max feel of a ruined world. Project director Josh Sawyer wanted the story to be about greed and excess, and the team had 18 months to finish. The map was built with US Geological Survey data and reference photos Sawyer took in the area. Inon Zur wrote the score, and more than 65,000 lines of dialogue were recorded, another Guinness World Record for a single-player role-playing game.

It came out in North America on October 19, 2010, in Australia on October 21 and in Europe on October 22. By November 8 it had sold five million copies. It launched with a lot of bugs, including crashes, corrupted saves and frame rate problems, and patches fixed many of them in the months after. Six add-ons followed: Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, Lonesome Road, Courier's Stash and Gun Runners' Arsenal.

Reviews were positive. Metacritic gave the PlayStation 3 version 82 out of 100 and the other versions 84. Bethesda had offered Obsidian a bonus for an 85, and the game missed it by one point. Critics liked the writing and quests, and some felt it played like a big expansion to Fallout 3. Estimates put sales at about 11.6 million by 2015.

Opinion of the game has warmed since release. Many players and writers now rank it as one of the best games in the series, and a long-running mod scene has kept it going.
