Overview

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is a video game adaptation of the 2009 movie of the same name, published by Electronic Arts. The story takes place after the film. The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 2 and PSP versions are similar, while the Nintendo DS and mobile versions are different games. Double Helix Games developed the console versions.

After the events of the movie, Duke and Scarlett travel to the Arctic and free Heavy Duty, Ripcord and Snake Eyes from the M.A.R.S. detention centre, then fight the Baroness. In Egypt the Joes learn that Cobra is taking Apep's Eye, and they must beat Firefly. In the jungle they find Cobra building a ziggurat-like structure, where they face James McCullen, now Destro, on the roof. The last fight against Cobra Commander is at a volcano base at the North Magnetic Pole.

Characters fall into classes. Commando characters do well at close range, Heavy Weapons characters shoot best from a distance, and the soldier class sits between the two. The classic battle cry "Yo, Joe!" is in the game as an invulnerability power-up that comes with the Accelerator Armor, which leaves the player undamaged while attacking Cobra troops and vehicles.

Reviews were mixed to negative. Metacritic gave the PS3 version 43 and the Xbox 360 version 42. IGN scored the main console version 5.8 out of 10 and criticised the graphics and the gameplay in general, though it gave the DS version a better 7.1. G4's X-Play scored it 1 out of 5.

Notes for collectors

  • The Platinum trophy is named G.I. JOE and needs all 43 other trophies.
  • Battle Master needs every one of the 130 Battle Points to be collected and spent.
  • Two trophies need a second player: It Takes Two (any mission in 2 player co-op) and Double Barrel Roll (10 barrel rolls in unison in co-op).
  • The Nintendo DS version is a different game, a top-down arcade shooter that reuses assets from a finished but unreleased Gauntlet game for DS.
  • Two disc IDs exist: BLUS30326 for North America and BLES00590 for Europe. Sony's patch server lists no update for either.
