Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War

Overview

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War is a 2004 combat flight simulation game developed and published by Namco for the PlayStation 2. It is the fifth entry in the Ace Combat series, serving as a sequel to Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies, and is likewise also set in the series' fictional universe of Strangereal. Set in 2010, the game's story follows fighter pilot "Blaze" and his squadron as they fight in a war between the superpower states of Osea and Yuktobania, and uncover the major conspiracy fueling the conflict that threatens to destroy both belligerents.

Although most of Ace Combat 5's gameplay remains similar to that of its predecessor, Ace Combat 04, several notable additions were made, including a more action-centric arcade mode and the ability for the player to command their wingmen. The multiplayer mode present in previous titles, however, was scrapped during development. A limited number of the games were bundled with the Hori Flightstick 2 accessory.

Ace Combat 5 released to generally favorable reviews, although critics noted that the game was not the "revolutionary step forward for the series" that Ace Combat 04 was. The game was rereleased as a port to the PlayStation 4 in 2019, as part of a pre-order bonus for Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.
