Overview

Infamous 2 is a 2011 action-adventure video game developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. The second installment in the Infamous series, it is the sequel to the 2009 video game Infamous.

The story follows protagonist Cole MacGrath on his quest in New Marais to grow powerful enough to face his nemesis, the Beast. Cole has electricity-based powers that he uses in combat and to get around, and the player gets chances to use them for good or selfish purposes in the game's Karma system. Karma affects which powers become available, how the city's people react to Cole, and the story.

Played in the third person in an open world, Cole can climb buildings, grind along power cables and powered train rails, and hover for a short time. Experience points are spent to strengthen powers or unlock new ones, and depending on the player's choices Cole can gain ice or fire powers from the game's female characters, Kuo and Nix. Hundreds of Blast Shards around the city raise how much electricity Cole can store, and Dead Drops fill in the back-story. A feature called User Generated Content let players make their own missions and share them through PlayStation Network.

Development began right after the first Infamous, led by returning game director Nate Fox, with a core team of 65 to 75 people. The music was composed by James Dooley, Bryan Mantia, Melissa Reese, the New Orleans band Galactic and Jonathan Mayer, and both the music and the fictional city were inspired by New Orleans. Jason Cottle, the original voice of Cole, was replaced by Eric Ladin because Sucker Punch wanted someone who could also perform Cole's movements with motion capture.

The game came out in North America on June 7, 2011, in Europe on June 8, in Australia on June 9, in the UK, Ireland and Germany on June 10, and in Japan on July 7. A Special Edition and a Hero Edition were announced for pre-order in February 2011. Infamous 2 was later released together with Infamous and Infamous: Festival of Blood as the Infamous Collection on August 28, 2012.

Reviews were generally positive. Praise went to the city design, traversal and graphics, while the Karma system and the camera drew criticism. The game was nominated for Best PS3 Game at the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards and was ranked 14th on IGN's Top 25 PlayStation 3 Games. According to the NPD Group it sold 369,200 copies in North America in June 2011.

A stand-alone expansion, Infamous: Festival of Blood, followed on October 25, 2011. A stand-alone sequel for the PlayStation 4, Infamous Second Son, was released in March 2014.
