Iron Man 2

Overview

Iron Man 2 is an action-adventure video game loosely based on the 2010 film of the same name. It was released in Australia on April 29, 2010, Europe on April 30 and North America on May 4 for Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Wii, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Published by Sega, it was developed by Sega Studios San Francisco for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Griptonite Games for Nintendo DS, High Voltage Software for Wii and PSP, and Gameloft for iOS and BlackBerry PlayBook. A Windows version was planned but cancelled.

The game has an original story written by Matt Fraction, author of The Invincible Iron Man comic, and is set after the film. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions let the player play as either Iron Man or War Machine. Iron Man is sleeker and relies on energy weapons, while War Machine has ballistic weapons and tougher armour. Iron Man can choose from several suits, Marks II through VI, and armour upgrades and weapons can be customised and switched during play.

The story starts with Iron Man defending the Dataspine, an archived version of J.A.R.V.I.S., before an EMP disables him. The trail leads from Roxxon through separatists under General Shatalov and the Crimson Dynamo armour to A.I.M. and Kearson DeWitt, who merges with a giant metal suit called Ultimo using Stark's PROTEAN technology.

Iron Man 2 was written by Matt Fraction and Sega creative director Kyle Brink, with additional writing by Phil Campbell and Stephen Frost. It features an exclusive song by Lamb of God, Hit the Wall. Robert Downey Jr. does not voice Iron Man; Eric Loomis does. Don Cheadle and Samuel L. Jackson reprise their film roles as War Machine and Nick Fury.

The game got mixed reviews. Metacritic scored the PS3 version in the low 40s, and critics split on whether it improved on the first game. IGN gave the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions 5.1 out of 10, citing the short campaign, repetitive play and lack of challenge. GameSpot gave the Xbox 360 version 4.5 and Empire gave it one star.
