Overview
Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon is a roguelike dungeon crawler developed and published by Square. A spin-off of the Final Fantasy series, it was also the first entry in what became the Chocobo series. It came out only in Japan, on December 23, 1997, for the PlayStation, and a WonderSwan version followed on March 4, 1999. It was re-released on the PlayStation Network in Japan in 2010 as a PSOne Classic.
The hero is a yellow chocobo named Poulet. The player fights through procedurally generated dungeons, picking up items and battling enemies. Combat is in real time with an Active Time Battle gauge like a Final Fantasy game, and attacks made before the gauge fills lose power and accuracy. There are three dungeons: one of 30 levels, one of 60 levels, and an endless dungeon that cycles its enemy types every 100 levels.
The game was produced by Koichi Nakamura, the founder of Chunsoft, and it was the solo composing debut of Masashi Hamauzu, who wrote the soundtrack and an arrangement album called Coi Vanni Gialli. It was shown as a video at Tokyo Game Show 1997, and on release it came with the Mysterious Data Disc, a bonus disc with movies of upcoming games and a playable demo of Xenogears.
Reviews were mixed: one magazine found the gameplay highly addictive and praised its music and cutscenes, while others called it rushed. In early 1998 it was still tenth in Famitsu's chart of the best selling games in Japan. It was the first game in the Mystery Dungeon series to pass one million copies sold, and it was followed in 1998 by Chocobo's Dungeon 2.
