Overview

Lost Planet 2 is a third-person shooter developed and published by Capcom for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows. It is the sequel to Lost Planet: Extreme Condition and takes place ten years after the first game, on the same planet. It was first planned for early 2010, then moved to 11 May 2010 in North America and Europe, 13 May in Australia and 20 May in Japan. It has sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide.

Much of the first game returns, including big boss fights, harsh terrain and the Vital Suits, the piloted mechs. There are more co-op suits this time, some that carry two extra players on the sides, and some flying suits. Thermal energy no longer drains all the time as it did in the first game. It drains while you pilot a suit and use weapons that need energy, and a player can pass energy to a teammate who has run out. Play earns experience points, and once the game is beaten on any difficulty that character can be used in the campaign. Points unlock costumes and attachments for your pirate.

On E.D.N. III the climate has changed in the ten years since the first game and the planet now has very different regions. The human factions still fight over thermal energy, called T-ENG, and the native Akrid have changed into new forms. The most dangerous are huge Akrid classed as Category G. The story is told in six episodes.

Lost Planet 2 runs on MT Framework 2.0, an updated version of the engine behind the first game. The campaign supports up to four players working together online. Players can build and customize their own characters, with much more depth than in the first game, and edit weapon looks and colours. It was announced on 8 February 2009. A PlayStation Network demo arrived on 24 September 2009 and a multiplayer demo on 22 April 2010.

Capcom added guest characters. PlayStation 3 players could download two Helghast skins from Killzone and Rathalos armour from Monster Hunter, and Frank West from Dead Rising and Albert Wesker from Resident Evil also appear. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago from Gears of War were added for the Xbox 360 version only. Map packs and a Boss Rush mode followed in June 2010.

Reviews were mixed or average on every platform. Critics liked the monster designs and the multiplayer, but many were frustrated by design and interface problems and the story. A Japanese magazine gave the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions 33 out of 40.

Notes for collectors

  • Capcom moved the release from early 2010 to May 2010 to stay out of the way of other big games.
  • Monster Hunter's Rathalos armour was a PlayStation 3 exclusive model, and two Helghast skins from Killzone were offered as free downloads on PS3.
  • Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago from Gears of War are Xbox 360 only.
  • The PS3 demo from September 2009 had two new levels and could launch four-player games straight from PlayStation Home.
  • Capcom said it would donate 50,000 US dollars to Music for Relief if the multiplayer demo reached a million downloads by 5 May 2010.
  • Reports in February 2010 that the Xbox 360 version was cut to fit one DVD were later called a mistranslation, and the producer said nothing was cut.
  • The platinum trophy needs all five factions at career level 99 and every Good Job award, and fewer than one in a thousand tracker users hold it.
