Overview

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a 2013 action-adventure hack and slash game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Konami. It was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February 2013, then for Windows, OS X and Nvidia Shield TV. It is a spin-off in the Metal Gear series, set four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It features the returning character Raiden as he confronts a private military company that wants to destabilize peaceful nations for profit.

The player controls Raiden, a katana-wielding cyborg. Unlike earlier Metal Gear games, the focus is on sword fighting rather than staying unseen, although stealth is still optional as a way to avoid combat. Through Blade Mode, Raiden can slow time and cut enemies and objects along any angle, then take health items from their bodies. He can also use sub-weapons such as rocket launchers and grenades, and other melee weapons can be won from bosses.

The story is set in 2018. Raiden works for Maverick Security Consulting and is drawn into a conflict with the rival company Desperado Enforcement, led by a team of cyborg assassins called the Winds of Destruction. Raiden's rival is Samuel Rodrigues, known as Jetstream Sam. A prototype robot named LQ-84i is later rebuilt as an ally and renamed Blade Wolf.

The game began at Kojima Productions, which announced it in 2009 as Metal Gear Solid: Rising. The team struggled to design a game around swordplay, and supervising director Hideo Kojima halted the project. In early 2011 PlatinumGames producer Atsushi Inaba asked about it, and Kojima handed development over. The renamed Revengeance was revealed at the Spike Video Game Awards on December 10, 2011. PlatinumGames changed the setting and mechanics, while Kojima Productions kept responsibility for the overall plot and Raiden's design.

The score was composed by Jamie Christopherson, with a heavy, fast style and vocal tracks that suit the action. A demo shipped inside the Zone of the Enders HD Collection in October 2012. The full game came out in North America on February 19, 2013, and in Europe and Japan on February 21. The Xbox 360 release in Japan was cancelled, and the PS3 version was added to PlayStation Plus in November 2013.

Critics praised the cutting system, the way Metal Gear elements support the story, the soundtrack and the boss fights. They criticized the camera and the short campaign. In Japan it topped the sales charts in its first week. Two story chapters, starring Jetstream Sam and Blade Wolf, were released as downloadable content, along with a set of extra VR missions.

Notes for collectors

  • The project started as Metal Gear Solid: Rising at Kojima Productions and moved to PlatinumGames in 2011. Much of the story and Raiden's design stayed with Kojima Productions.
  • A demo came bundled with the Zone of the Enders HD Collection on PS3 and Xbox 360 in October 2012.
  • The Cyborg Ninja body was a retailer pre-order bonus in Japan and North America. European copies included it.
  • The Japanese VR Missions pack included a wooden sword called Hebidamashi that talks in Solid Snake's voice. It was not in the English version.
  • The PS3 version was added to PlayStation Plus in November 2013.
  • The PS3 trophy list has 61 trophies. 51 are in the base game and 10 come from the VR Mission Expansion, Sam's Side Story and Wolf's Side Story packs.
  • The game's results screen showed about five and a half hours for a clear and some players called it short. PlatinumGames said the screen leaves out cutscenes and failed attempts.
