Overview
NHL 09 is the 17th video game in the NHL series released by EA Sports, and it came out in 2008. It was the final NHL game released on the PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions were developed by EA Canada, and the Windows and PS2 versions by HB Studios. Calgary Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf is on the cover.
Online play lets you create a player to use in a 6 versus 6 online teamplay mode. You can join online teams with friends or find players to build one, level up your player, take part in tournaments with brackets, and receive awards at the end of the season. Rosters were updated, along with slap shot power and accuracy.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions were released first, on 9 September 2008 in North America, 25 September in Australia and 26 September in Europe for PS3. The Windows version followed on 20 October 2008 and the PS2 version on 4 November 2008 in North America.
The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions received generally favourable reviews on Metacritic, while the PC version got mixed reviews. At the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences gave NHL 09 Sports Game of the Year, and it was also nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay.
