Tactical shooter
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is a tactical shooter for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, developed and published by Codemasters. Codemasters sold it as a tactical shooter that portrays modern infantry combat realistically. It is a stand-alone sequel to Bohemia Interactive's Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, but Codemasters made it alone after a falling-out between the two companies.
The story is set in May 2011 on the fictional island of Skira. After the 2008 financial crisis, China's People's Liberation Army takes the island and its newly found oil from Russia, and the United States steps in to retake it. Skira is based on the real island of Kiska in the Aleutians, and the developers copied its terrain to build a sandbox of natural landscape. You play as 2nd Lieutenant Mulholland or Sergeant Hunter.
There are more than 70 weapons with a ballistics system based on real specifications, and a single shot can kill the player at any difficulty. Difficulty levels change how much the HUD tells you, from showing spotted enemies at the lowest level to no on-screen information at all. The highest difficulty removes checkpoints.
In storyline co-op, up to four players can play the campaign together, each replacing a computer-controlled soldier. Multiplayer has four maps on the disc plus the Annihilation and Infiltration modes. The game has no dedicated servers. Seven bonus missions unlock with codes: two came from the game's Recruit website and five went to pre-order customers.
The game runs on a version of Codemasters' EGO Engine, shared with its racing games. Two downloadable multiplayer packs followed, and the Skirmish pack came out on PC on November 5, 2009, with Xbox 360 and PS3 versions later. On February 16, 2010 a Codemasters community manager announced that development of new content had stopped.
Metacritic's scores were generally favourable: 76 on PS3, 77 on Xbox 360 and 76 on PC. IGN said it was unique, fun and challenging but unpolished, and said it should not have been released on consoles. The sequel is Operation Flashpoint: Red River.
