Overview

Prototype 2 is a 2012 action-adventure game developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Activision. It is the sequel to 2009's Prototype. It was announced at the 2010 Spike VGA Awards and released in April 2012 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, then in July 2012 for Windows. In July 2015 it was re-released with its predecessor as the Prototype Biohazard Bundle for PS4 and Xbox One.

The story follows a new hero, former U.S. Marine Sergeant James Heller. He returns from Iraq in 2009 to find his wife and daughter declared dead after a new outbreak of the Blacklight virus in Manhattan, and he goes after Alex Mercer, the hero of the first game, who started it. Heller is infected with a strain of the virus that gives him powers like Mercer's, including shapeshifting and consuming people, while letting him keep his humanity.

It is played from a third-person view in an open world based on modern Manhattan, now called New York Zero. Heller can take on other people's identities and memories by consuming them, and he can also run up buildings, glide, and use tendrils for attacks like the Black Hole. Side missions now come from hacking Blacknet terminals in the three zones of the city, instead of events scattered around the map. He can rip a gatling cannon off a tank, turn unsuspecting enemies into BioBombs, and send a pack of Brawlers after a target.

Development started soon after the success of the first game and ran for about three years. The game was built on Radical's Titanium 2.0 engine and was partly written by Dan Jolley. First-run and pre-ordered copies came with Radnet, a set of 55 extra pieces of content (events, challenges, avatar items, PS3 themes and behind the scenes videos) released weekly from April 24 to June 7, 2012. A three-volume Dark Horse comic series bridges the gap between the two games.
