Overview

Rage is a first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. It came out in October 2011 for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and in February 2012 for OS X. It was first shown as a tech demo at the 2007 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference and uses id Software's id Tech 5 engine. It is the last game id released under the supervision of founder John Carmack.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic near future, after the asteroid 99942 Apophis hits Earth in 2029. You play Nicholas Raine, a soldier who wakes in an underground shelter called an Ark 106 years later and finds himself wanted by an oppressive group called the Authority. Dan Hagar, voiced by John Goodman, saves him from bandits and sends him on to the town of Wellspring, and from there Raine joins the Resistance and fights his way into the Authority's headquarters at Capital Prime.

It mixes first-person shooting with driving. You explore the wasteland in a vehicle, race and fight other cars, and take on missions on foot. Weapons are upgradeable and each has several ammo types, such as the crossbow's electrified and explosive bolts, and there are boomerang-like Wingsticks for stealthy kills. There are role-playing touches too, including an inventory, looting, and crafting items from collected recipes. Multiplayer has two modes: Road Rage, a four-player vehicle arena free-for-all, and Legends of the Wasteland, two-player co-op missions.

A team of around 60 core developers worked on it, and it was meant to be the first game in a longer series. Design director Matt Hooper said it began from the idea of muscle cars in a desert. Electronic Arts was first named as publisher, but after ZeniMax bought id in 2009 it took over publishing. The PS3 version is on one Blu-ray disc, while the Windows and Xbox 360 versions needed three dual-layer DVDs. Rage was expected to get a Teen rating from the ESRB but received Mature.

Pre-orders of the standard edition were upgraded to the Anarchy Edition, which adds Crimson Elite Armor, a double barrel shotgun, Fists of Rage and a buggy called the Rat Rod. The Wasteland Sewer Missions pack was out on release day, and The Scorchers pack followed on December 18, 2012 for PS3, Xbox 360 and Windows. It added a new bandit clan, six new areas, a Nailgun, new minigames, and an Ultra Nightmare difficulty.

Reviews were generally positive on every platform. Critics praised the graphics, the gunplay and the combat, and criticised the thin story and forgettable characters. Famitsu scored the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions 35 out of 40. The game also turned up as the game Jesse plays in two 2011 episodes of Breaking Bad, which led to Breaking Bad references being added to the game. A sequel, Rage 2, followed on May 14, 2019.

Rage has online Road Rage matches and Legends of the Wasteland co-op. The campaign does not need either, but two trophies ask for a public Road Rage match.

  • Pre-ordered standard copies were upgraded to the Anarchy Edition for free.
  • The UK Collector's Pack added a Dark Horse comic and a Making Of DVD.
