Sengoku Musou 4

Overview

Sengoku Musou 4 is the Japanese title of Samurai Warriors 4, a 2014 hack and slash game by Koei Tecmo and Omega Force for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. It is the sequel to Samurai Warriors 3. Unlike past games in the series it has only Japanese voice overs. The PS3 and Vita versions came out in Japan on March 20, 2014, and the PS4 version followed on September 4, 2014. North America got it on October 21, 2014 and Europe on October 24.

It was made to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the series. The game was confirmed for PS3 in 2012 and officially announced at the SCEJA Press Conference in September 2013. Revised versions followed: Sengoku Musou 4-II in 2015, with Naomasa Ii as a playable character and a reworked Story Mode, then Samurai Warriors 4 Empires in 2015 and 2016, and a Deluxe edition on Switch, PS4 and Windows.

Players take two characters into battle and swap between them freely, like in the spin-off Samurai Warriors: Chronicles. Hyper Attacks are a second moveset that sweeps through crowds, though it does nothing against enemy officers, and Rage Mode makes you invincible for a time and boosts attacks and Musou attacks. Duels trigger when player-controlled characters meet enemy officers under certain conditions. Create-a-warrior returns with much more content, and custom characters can be played in Chronicle Mode.

Story Mode drops the one story per character format. It now has ten stories based on clans and regions of the Sengoku period, all leading to two final stories, Unification, centered on Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the road to Sekigahara, and Sanada, a parallel story about the Sanada clan. The earliest battle shown is Itsukushima in 1555, and the last is the siege of Osaka in 1614 and 1615. The game has 55 characters, with nine new ones, and the II update brings it to 56.

Reviews were positive and at the time it was the highest rated entry in the series. Famitsu gave both the PS3 and Vita versions 34 out of 40. In its first week in Japan the PS3 version sold 120,452 physical copies, second place for all software that week, and the Vita version sold 39,597.
