Infamous is a 2009 action-adventure game developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. You play Cole MacGrath, a bike messenger caught in the centre of an explosion that flattens several blocks of the fictional Empire City. The blast leaves him with electricity-based powers while the city falls into chaos.
It is an open-world game played from behind the character. Cole stores electrical power, which he refills by draining generators and other powered sources, and uses it for sixteen powers used in movement, offence and defence. He cannot use vehicles or touch water, but he can climb nearly every building and fall from any height without harm.
A Karma system tracks whether you play as a Hero or as Infamous. Karma moments pause the action and offer a good and an evil choice, and paired side missions lock out the other path. Your Karma changes how Cole looks, which powers you can buy, how the story plays out and how the citizens treat him. There are two endings, depending on your rank at the end.
Empire City is built on three islands, the Neon District, the Warren and the Historic District. Each is held by a gang, and you free sectors by taking on side missions. Collectibles include blast shards that raise your power storage and dead drops that fill in the backstory.
About sixty people at Sucker Punch worked on it for three years, after they finished the Sly Cooper series. They wanted something louder and more comic-book, and took inspiration from the comics DMZ and Batman: No Man's Land. Nate Fox directed and Bill Harms helped with the story. The music was written by Amon Tobin, James Dooley and Mel Wesson, with electric cello by Martin Tillman.
It went on sale on May 26, 2009 in North America and on May 29 in Europe. Reviews were generally positive. Critics praised the powers, the climbing, the mission structure and the story, and noted repetitive combat, a limited Karma system and some technical roughness. It reached nearly two million sales by June 2010.
A sequel, Infamous 2, followed in June 2011. The game was handed out free as part of Sony's Welcome Back programme after the 2011 PlayStation Network outage, and it came out again in 2012 in the Infamous Collection with Infamous 2 and Festival of Blood.
