Overview

Tales of Xillia is an action role-playing game released for the PlayStation 3. It is the thirteenth main installment of the Tales series and was developed by Namco Tales Studio with Namco Bandai Games as the publisher. The game came out in Japan in September 2011 and was localized for North America and PAL regions in August 2013.

The game takes place in a fictional world called Rieze Maxia, where humans and ethereal spirits live in harmony. It follows Jude Mathis and Milla Maxwell, who elude government officials after sabotaging a weapon of mass destruction known as the Lance of Kresnik. Jude is a medical student and Milla is the successor of the spirit Maxwell. The two are later joined by Alvin, Elize Lutus, Rowen J. Illbert and Leia Rolando.

Tales of Xillia is made of two main areas: a realistically scaled 3D field map and a battle screen. On the field map the player talks to characters and explores, and optional skits show the party chatting through animated portraits and voice acting. Touching an enemy on the map switches to a battle arena where the player commands the party in real time.

Battles use the Dual Raid Linear Motion Battle System, a variation of the Linear Motion Battle used across the series. Four characters fight at once, and the ones the player is not controlling are run by AI. Party members can link up to perform linked artes, and filling the Linked Artes Gauge lets the player enter Over Limit, which gives immunity to stagger and unlimited action points. Characters grow through the Lilium Orb, a hexagonal web of skill and attribute nodes.

Development began after Tales of Hearts was completed. A PlayStation 3 Tales game was teased in July 2010, and the game was shown in full that December. The theme song, "Progress" by Ayumi Hamasaki, kept its Japanese vocals in the Western release. Some planned features were cut for time, including an onsen scene and having Gaius or Muzet as playable characters. Mutsumi Inomata and Kosuke Fujishima designed the characters.

A Western release was announced in July 2012. English voice recording finished in November 2012, with the game translated by 8-4 and dubbed by Cup of Tea Productions. The European release has subtitles in English, French, Spanish, German and Italian. In North America the first print was sold as a limited edition bundle, and a collector's edition was also released. The game later got a PlayStation 3 The Best re-release in Japan in October 2014.

In Japan the game was the most preordered Tales game in the series and sold half a million copies in its first week. It had shipped over one million copies worldwide by December 2013 and won a Gold Prize at the PlayStation Awards and an Award of Excellence at the Famitsu Awards. English reviewers agreed the battle system was fast and engaging, but several criticized the map design as repetitive. The English release was nominated for a Satellite Award for Outstanding Role Playing Game in 2013. A remaster, Tales of Xillia Remastered, came out in October 2025.
