Overview

The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest is an action-adventure game released in 2010 by WB Games on various Nintendo and Sony platforms. TT Fusion developed the PlayStation 3 version, while Headstrong Games developed the Wii version. It adapts Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy and was the first Lord of the Rings game released by WB Games, who had acquired the film game rights from Electronic Arts in 2009.

The game is set fifteen years after the War of the Ring. Samwise Gamgee tells his children the story of Aragorn's adventures during the war, and those stories make up most of the game. The aim was to give younger players a simplified and less violent version of the three films.

On the PS3 and Wii, the game is a third person action-adventure split in two. The main game follows Aragorn through eight levels that can be played linear or open, with required and optional quests. In the other part, the player controls Sam's son Frodo in a free roam overworld in the Shire, helping the hobbits prepare a party for Aragorn. Skills Frodo learns in the Shire become available to Aragorn.

Combat uses five basic sword moves, with charged versions, chain attacks and special abilities such as Battle Cry and Rally. AI controlled allies fight alongside the player and can be upgraded. A second player can drop in at any time as Gandalf, who fights with a staff and can heal Aragorn or give him boosts, and as Elanor in the Shire. The PS3 version works with the DualShock 3 or the PlayStation Move.

Development was first reported in May 2009 and the game was shown at E3 2009. It was delayed more than once. In March 2010, WB Games announced a PS3 version with PlayStation Move support and a two player co-op option that the PS2 and handheld versions did not have. Because of a rushed development, North American copies of the PS3 version shipped without Move support in the disc's code, and a free patch had to be downloaded to use the controllers.

The game received mixed reviews. The graphics, level design and accessibility were praised, while critics found the combat repetitive, the story too short and the game too easy. The PS3 version holds a Metacritic score of 58 out of 100.
