Overview

Dragon Age: Inquisition is a 2014 action role-playing game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. It is the third major Dragon Age game and the sequel to Dragon Age II. You lead the Inquisition to end the unrest across Thedas and close the Breach, a tear in the sky that lets demons through. It came out for PS3, PS4, Windows, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

It is a semi-open-world game with several large hub regions. You choose a race (human, dwarf, elf or Qunari, the first playable Qunari in the series) and one of three classes: warrior, mage or rogue. Combat is third person, with a tactical view that pauses the game so you can give orders. You also run Skyhold, the Inquisition's base, and send out agents on War Table missions. There are nine companions and three advisors, and eight of them can be romanced. A separate co-operative multiplayer mode sits alongside the campaign.

The Conclave at Haven is destroyed, creating the Breach and leaving you as the only survivor, marked with a power called the Anchor. You rebuild the Inquisition to stand against Corypheus, an ancient Darkspawn mage. The story involves the Grey Wardens, the Orlesian civil war and the Temple of Mythal.

Development began in 2011, with full production starting in 2012. The game uses EA DICE's Frostbite 3 engine, which the team found hard to work with because it was built for first-person games. EA required releases on PS3 and Xbox 360 as well, and the older hardware forced cuts to features. Trevor Morris composed the score, replacing the series' earlier composer Inon Zur.

The game was first set for October 7, 2014 and was pushed back about six weeks to polish it. It was released on November 18, 2014 in North America, November 20 in Europe and November 21 in Australia. It was not released in India, to avoid a breach of local content laws. After launch BioWare added free multiplayer packs and the single-player story packs Jaws of Hakkon, The Descent and Trespasser. Xbox One and PC were first to get Jaws of Hakkon, on March 24, 2015.

Reviews were generally favourable, praising exploration, combat, writing, characters and the return of the tactical view, and criticising filler content, technical issues and a weak central plot. It won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2014 and at the D.I.C.E. Awards. It was BioWare's most successful launch by units sold, and in 2024 BioWare's Mark Darrah put total sales above 12 million.
