Overview

FIFA 12 (titled FIFA Soccer 12 in North America) is a football simulation video game developed by EA Canada and published by Electronic Arts under the EA Sports label. It came out in September 2011 for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP, Nintendo 3DS, Windows, Mac OS X and several phone platforms, with a version called FIFA Football as a launch title for the PlayStation Vita. Producer David Rutter promised a revolutionary year, especially in gameplay.

Three gameplay changes lead the list. The Impact Engine improves collisions, accuracy and momentum, and affects injuries. Tactical Defending makes you position yourself, intercept and tackle rather than hold a button for an automatic press, and the old system, called legacy defending, remains for offline play and unranked online matches. Precision Dribbling lets you shield the ball while moving, and a new Pro Player Intelligence system has AI players react to the strengths of the players around them.

Career Mode adds manager relationships with players and the media, so team selection, results and wages affect morale, and unhappy players can talk to the press and attract other clubs. Each club gets a transfer mentality, and the last day of the transfer window plays out hour by hour with a countdown clock.

Online play adds Head to Head Seasons, where you climb ten divisions over ten game seasons, plus a flow matchmaking option and the option to be paired only with players using manual controls. EA Sports Football Club launched alongside the game as a social layer that tracks what you do, awards XP, and ties into friend and worldwide leaderboards.

There are 42 national teams and 56 stadiums, including new real grounds such as Manchester City's Etihad Stadium, Juventus Stadium and BC Place in Vancouver. Martin Tyler returns as lead commentator with Alan Smith replacing Andy Gray, and it is the first FIFA game released in Arabic. In the UK, an Ultimate Edition sold at Game and Gamestation included four monthly Ultimate Team Gold packs.

UEFA Euro 2012 was released as an add-on on 24 April 2012, and it needs FIFA 12 and an internet connection. It brings an Expedition mode and all 53 UEFA member nations, 24 of them unlicensed. It received mixed reviews, and complaints about freezing led to a fix.

FIFA 12 scored 90 on Metacritic on both Xbox 360 and PS3. IGN gave it 9.5 out of 10, Eurogamer 9 and 1UP an A, and it won Sports Game of the Year at the 15th Interactive Achievement Awards. EA reported 3.2 million copies sold in the first week, up 23 percent on FIFA 11, and said eight million had shipped and five million sold by 27 October 2011.

UEFA Euro 2012 was a paid expansion released on 24 April 2012, with 10 achievements worth 250G. It was taken off the Xbox Live Marketplace in June 2014. Its offline modes still play for owners; its online mode closed with the servers.
