Kinect Star Wars

Overview

Kinect Star Wars is a 2012 Star Wars game developed by Terminal Reality and published by LucasArts and Microsoft Studios for the Xbox 360. It uses the Kinect motion sensor and has four game modes: Jedi Destiny, podracing, Rancor Rampage and Galactic Dance-off.

In Jedi Destiny: Dark Side Rising, the main mode, you play a Jedi Padawan and use your hands to wield a lightsaber and your gestures to throw objects with the Force. It is set between The Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith, and mostly features enemies from the prequel trilogy. A second Jedi mode, Duels of Fate, has one-on-one duels with characters from the campaign and villains such as Darth Vader.

Podracing uses Kinect to copy dual throttle controls: you stretch your arms out for full speed and pull them back to ease off one or both engines. Rancor Rampage is a destruction mode where you control a rancor let loose in Star Wars locations. Galactic Dance-off is a dance mode like Dance Central and Just Dance, with Star Wars-themed rewrites of pop songs, such as Hologram Girl, Empire Today and I'm Han Solo.

Microsoft Studios had planned a Star Wars game since early in Kinect's development. It was announced at E3 on June 6, 2011 and released worldwide on April 3, 2012. Craig Derrick was LucasArts' lead producer. It was the last game published by LucasArts before Disney halted all internal development at the company a year later.

Five pieces of downloadable content exist: a podracer flown by an adult Anakin Skywalker that was only available through a Brisk iced tea promotion, a Snow Rancor, a Korriban Rancor, the bounty hunter Aurra Sing and the Jedi Master Kit Fisto. A limited edition Xbox 360 S console bundle was released alongside the game, styled after R2-D2.

Reviews were mixed, and the game appears on several lists of the worst Star Wars games. The dance and rancor modes drew some praise, while the Jedi Destiny controls and combat were criticized. It debuted at number one on the UK all formats chart, the first Kinect-exclusive game to do so and the first Star Wars game to top the charts since 2008.
