Overview

Star Trek is a 2013 action-adventure third person shooter developed by Digital Extremes and published by Namco Bandai Games under license from Paramount Pictures. It is set in the Kelvin timeline of the rebooted films and sits between Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness. It was released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows.

You play as Kirk or Spock, and the two take different paths through each mission. Kirk plays like a conventional shooter with a stun setting, while Spock uses stealth, a freezing weapon, the nerve pinch and the mind meld. It is a single player game with two player co-op, and a teammate AI fills in when you play alone. You cannot swap characters in the middle of a chapter, and drop in co-op is not supported. There is a cover system, tricorders that interact with the environment, space dives, swimming levels, turret sections aboard the Enterprise, platforming and mini-games.

The Enterprise answers a distress call from a binary star power station that was harvesting energy for the Helios device, which would speed up the terraforming of New Vulcan. A rip in space opens, and the Gorn come through, steal the device and kidnap T'Mar, Spock's childhood friend, and her father Surok. Kirk and Spock follow them through the rip into the Gorn's galaxy, fight in an arena and retake the Enterprise, then destroy the device and defeat the Gorn Commander.

Production began about three years before release, in house at Paramount rather than licensed out, with the film's producers and writers involved. Marianne Krawczyk wrote the plot, and Chad Seiter composed the music, drawing on Michael Giacchino's score for the 2009 film. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana voiced their film roles. The team named Mass Effect, Uncharted and Metroid Prime as influences, and the Gorn were redesigned with fifteen classes.

It came out in North America on April 23, 2013 and in Europe on April 26, shortly before Star Trek Into Darkness reached cinemas. An Elite Officer Pack of character skins and extra weapons was offered to pre-order customers.

Reviews were poor. On Metacritic the Xbox 360 version scored 42, the PC version 43 and the PS3 version 45. Critics pointed to generic combat, poor animation, camera problems, repetitive mini-games and an unfinished feel, and the voice cast was a small bright spot. It sold about 140,000 copies across all platforms in its first three weeks and was widely called a flop.

Notes for collectors

• Kirk and Spock take different routes through the missions, and you cannot switch between them mid chapter.
• The Elite Officer Pack was a pre-order extra and cannot be bought now.
• The film cast voiced their roles, and Simon Pegg improvised some of Scotty's lines.
• Kinect and PlayStation Move support were considered but not included.
• The Xbox 360 list has 49 achievements worth 1,000 gamerscore. Two of them need you to finish the game, one on any difficulty and one on hard.
• Spock bleeding out while downed, which fails the mission, is an achievement called I Shall Always Be Your Friend.
