Red Dead Redemption

Overview

Red Dead Redemption is a 2010 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games. A successor to 2004's Red Dead Revolver, it is the second game in the Red Dead series. It is set during the decline of the American frontier in 1911, and follows John Marston, a former outlaw whose wife and son are taken hostage by the government in ransom for his services as a hired gun. He sets out to bring three members of his former gang to justice.

The game is played from a third-person perspective. The player can roam freely in an open world that is a fictionalized version of the Western United States and northern Mexico. Side activities include hunting, poker, Liar's Dice, horseshoes, bounty hunting and tasks for strangers, and the slow-motion Dead Eye targeting mode helps in gunfights. Online, the game has a free roam mode where players can form posses, plus competitive and cooperative multiplayer.

Development lasted over five years, and the game became one of the most expensive ever made. Analysts put the combined development and marketing budget at between 80 and 100 million US dollars. Its 1,500-page script took two years to write, and the team picked 1911 as the setting because it let them show the shift from the old West into the modern world. Rockstar announced the game on February 3, 2009, and after being pushed back from late 2009 and April 2010 it was released on May 18, 2010 in North America and May 21 elsewhere.

Downloadable content followed after launch. Outlaws to the End (June 22, 2010) added six cooperative side missions, Legends and Killers (August 10) added multiplayer characters and a Tomahawk, Liars and Cheats (September 21) added competitive modes and minigames, and Hunting and Trading (October 12) added a jackalope and outfits. Undead Nightmare arrived on October 26 with a zombie-themed single player campaign, and Myths and Mavericks was released free on September 13, 2011. A Game of the Year Edition with all the downloadable content came out on October 11, 2010 in North America and October 14 internationally.

Red Dead Redemption received universal acclaim, and is among the highest-rated games on Metacritic. It was the best-selling game of May 2010 in the US with over 1.5 million copies, sold over five million in its first three weeks, and had shipped over 11 million copies by August 2011. At the 2010 Spike Video Game Awards it won Game of the Year, Best Song in a Game, Best Original Score and Best DLC, and it won Game of the Year at the Game Developers Choice Awards. It has since shipped over 25 million copies and a prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, followed in October 2018.

Notes for collectors

• The PS3 trophy list has 91 trophies. 49 are in the base game and 42 sit in four DLC packs: Outlaws To The End Co-Op, Legends and Killers, Liars and Cheats and Undead Nightmare.
• Edge first scored the game 9 out of 10, then changed it to 10 out of 10 later.
• Undead Nightmare was also sold as its own disc in late November 2010. It bundles the zombie campaign with the Legends and Killers and Liars and Cheats packs and does not need the original game.
• There are three PS3 disc IDs to know: BLUS30418 for the North American original, BLES00680 for Europe, and BLUS30758 / BLES01294 for the Game of the Year Edition.
• Several trophies need other players, such as the free roam and Gold Rush ones, so a full set depends on finding people to play with.
