Assassin's Creed Unity

Overview

Assassin's Creed Unity is a 2014 action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It was released in November 2014 for PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One. It is the eighth major game in the series and follows Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. It is tied to Assassin's Creed Rogue, which came out for the previous generation of consoles on the same day.

The main story is set in Paris during the French Revolution, from 1789 to 1794, and follows Arno Dorian, an Assassin who tries to expose the real powers behind the Revolution while seeking revenge for the murder of his adoptive father. A present-day framing story follows an unseen initiate who helps the Assassins find the body of an 18th-century Templar Grand Master. Historical figures such as the Marquis de Sade, Robespierre and a young Napoleon Bonaparte appear.

Paris is recreated at roughly 1:1 scale, split into seven districts plus the town of Versailles. Combat takes inspiration from fencing, there is manual crouching and the Phantom Blade, and Arno has a skill tree and customizable gear. Side content includes Paris Stories, Murder Mysteries and Nostradamus Enigmas. It adds cooperative play for up to four players in narrative missions, a first for the series, and crowds of up to 1,000 individual characters.

Development began after Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and ran for more than three years. The game was delayed from 28 October 2014 to 11 November in North America, 13 November in Europe and Australasia, and 14 November in the United Kingdom. Chris Tilton, Sarah Schachner and Ryan Amon composed the music.

Reviews were mixed. Critics liked the setting, visuals and customization, but the game was widely criticized for graphical problems and bugs. Ubisoft apologized, halted sales of the season pass and Gold Edition, gave Dead Kings away free, and gave season pass buyers a free copy of another Ubisoft game. Unity still sold over 10 million copies by May 2020. In March 2026 an update allowed 4K at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5 for the PS4 version.

Notes for collectors

• Ubisoft stopped selling the season pass after the launch problems, and season pass owners were offered a free copy of one of six other Ubisoft games.
• Dead Kings was given away for free. Its trophies, such as Fraternité!, are on the same 58-trophy list.
• The game was delayed two weeks from 28 October 2014 to 11 November.
• Ubisoft gave the PC version away free from 17 to 25 April 2019 after the Notre Dame fire, and donated 500,000 euros to the rebuild. That offer was PC only.
• Co-op needs a partner for some missions, so some missions cannot be done solo.
• In March 2026 a patch let the PS4 and Xbox One versions run at 4K and 60 fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.
