Overview

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is a compilation of first-person shooter games developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K. The Handsome Collection consists of both Borderlands 2 (2012) and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (2014) for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, along with all of their accompanying downloadable content, enhanced local multiplayer, and the ability to transfer save data from their respective PlayStation 3 (Both Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel), Vita (Borderlands 2 only) and Xbox 360 versions. Borderlands 2 was ported by Iron Galaxy Studios and The Pre-Sequel by Armature Studio.

Both games have remastered graphics and run at 1080p and 60 frames per second with one or two local players. Local split-screen supports up to four players, instead of the two-player limit of the previous-generation versions, with the frame rate dropping to 30 fps in four-player mode. A patch on 3 April 2019 added 4K support for PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. Save data, including characters and Badass Rank, can be migrated from the PlayStation 3 and Vita versions.

The compilation was announced on 20 January 2015, for a release in North America on 24 March 2015 and elsewhere on 27 March 2015. A limited Claptrap-in-a-Box edition was also announced: a US$399 bundle with lithographs of the playable characters from both games, a SteelBook case and a remote-controlled Claptrap robot that is controlled from an Android or iOS device with the ClaptrApp. Only 5,000 copies of it were produced. Gearbox declared the game gold on 18 March 2015.

Both games include all of their downloadable content, such as campaigns and additional playable characters. Claptastic Voyage, a campaign for The Pre-Sequel that was released on the same day as the compilation, is not included on the disc but is a free download.

The compilation does not include the first Borderlands. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said at PAX South that they might consider a port if The Handsome Collection was wildly successful, and Borderlands received a separate remaster for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019. A Nintendo Switch port of The Handsome Collection was released on 29 May 2020 alongside Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition.

The Handsome Collection received positive reviews. Metacritic gave the PlayStation 4 version 82 out of 100 based on 49 reviews. IGN gave it 8.4 out of 10 and praised the performance of the Borderlands 2 port, while noting that the inventory menu in four-player mode was not scaled to the smaller screen, that The Pre-Sequel had inconsistent frame rates and that players cannot switch between the games without rebooting. GamesRadar praised the amount of content but noted minor framerate issues and no significant new features.

• The collection has two platinum trophies, one for each game.
• Saves from the PS3 and Vita versions of Borderlands 2 and the PS3 version of The Pre-Sequel can be moved to the PS4.
