First-person shooter
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is a 2016 first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It is the thirteenth installment in the Call of Duty series and was released worldwide for PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One on November 4, 2016.
The campaign is a war for the Solar System, where the Settlement Defense Front, a hostile force of former colonies, is trying to take over. The player is Nick Reyes of the Special Combat Air Recon, who has a transforming fighter called the Jackal that can be customized, and a hub ship named Retribution. Players can move between space combat and boots-on-the-ground combat with no loading screen, and use zero-gravity movement, a boost pack and a grappling hook.
Multiplayer replaces classes with six Combat Rigs (Warfighter, Merc, FTL, Stryker, Phantom and Synaptic), keeps the chain-based movement of Black Ops III, and adds weapon crafting with Prototype Weapons. Zombies in Spaceland is a separate cooperative mode with its own story, set in an 80s theme park, with Fate and Fortune Cards as temporary boosts.
Development began in 2014. It is the first game by Infinity Ward under the three-year development cycle, and the first from the studio since Call of Duty: Ghosts. The announcement trailer drew a strong negative reaction at the time, which commentators put down to fans being tired of futuristic settings. Special editions shipped with a remastered Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, titled Modern Warfare Remastered.
Reviews were generally positive for the console versions. Critics liked the gameplay, the characters and Zombies, but multiplayer was criticised and the campaign split opinion. Retrospective reviewers have praised the campaign as one of the series' finest. Sales were below earlier entries in the series, but it was the top-selling game in the US and UK in November 2016, and the PS4 version sold 105,764 copies in its first week in Japan, the best of that week.
