Call of Duty: WWII

Overview

Call of Duty: WWII is a 2017 first-person shooter developed by Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision. It was released worldwide on November 3, 2017, for PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One. It is the fourteenth main installment in the Call of Duty series and the first set mainly in World War II since Call of Duty: World at War in 2008.

The campaign is set in the European theatre and follows a squad in the 1st Infantry Division through the Western Front, built around Operation Overlord (D-Day). You play Ronald "Red" Daniels. There is no regenerating health in the campaign: squadmates can supply health, ammo and grenades, and call in mortar strikes or spot enemies.

Multiplayer has a new Divisions system in place of create-a-class, a social hub called Headquarters, and a War mode with objective-based maps. Nazi Zombies is a cooperative mode with its own story, and the DLC packs add new Zombies maps.

Sledgehammer wanted to return the series to World War II after Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. The studio chose to show the Nazi camps and other atrocities in the campaign so the story would feel true to the period. Swastikas appear in the campaign but were left out of multiplayer and Zombies to follow German law.

Reviews were generally positive on PS4 and Xbox One. Critics praised the story, the combat changes, the multiplayer and the visuals, and criticised the campaign for a lack of new ideas. The game made over 500 million US dollars in its first three days. By the end of 2017 it had over 20.7 million players, 12.1 million of them on PS4, and it was the highest-grossing console game of 2017 in North America.

Notes for collectors

• It is the first main Call of Duty without health regeneration in the campaign since the original game and Call of Duty 2: Big Red One.
• Swastikas appear in the campaign but were removed from multiplayer and Zombies to follow German law.
• Before launch the studio drew criticism for letting players pick female and Black German soldiers in online multiplayer.
• The Platinum needs trophies from all four DLC Zombies packs, so the map packs are required for 100 percent.
• A free winter version of the Carentan map came out on 2017-12-07, and the Shipment 1944 remake came out on 2018-03-13 for season pass holders.
• The first week in Japan, the PS4 version sold 168,234 copies and was that week's best-selling game.
