Cabela's Outdoor Adventures

Overview

Cabela's Outdoor Adventures is a hunting game released in North America only, on September 8, 2009 by Activision for home consoles and on October 13, 2009 for Windows. It came out on PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360. It was developed by Fun Labs, and Zoo Digital Publishing is also credited as a publisher.

There are over 50 hunting and fishing adventures that use gear and tactics such as animal calls and stealth. The game was designed around the moments hunters recall, like stalking a deer, squeezing the trigger, hooking a fish or snap-shooting a flushed bird, and it follows real life hunting rules. You can upgrade your gear with real branded equipment. Multiple difficulty levels and a tutorial mode are included.

New to the series is a reworked shooting system called VITALS, short for Visually Integrated Targeting and Lock-on System. It lets you aim at the vitals of the animal for a clean shot and gives a closer view of the animals as they react. Unlike the first game, this one has only the story mode, and you can shoot whatever you find.

You play an unnamed hunter on guided trips across North America. The trip starts in Kansas with white-tailed deer, pheasants, ducks, turkeys, rabbits and fishing. It moves on to Idaho for elk, mule deer, mountain goats and coyotes, then British Columbia for Columbian blacktail deer, woodland caribou and black bears, and ends in Alaska with moose, brown bears, waterfowl and a rare piebald Sitka deer.

Activision announced the game in July 2009 for fall release. Reviews were mixed. Critics said it improved on earlier Cabela's games, while IGN noted a few issues and a fishing mode that felt phoned in.
