Overview

Curious George is a 2006 platform game developed by Vicious Cycle Software and published by Namco Hometek. It was released for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox and Windows, and is based on the 2006 animated film of the same name. A separate 2D version was made for the Game Boy Advance by Torus Games. Frank Welker and David Cross voice George and Junior in the cutscenes, which are taken from the film.

The player controls George, who can jump, swing and slide through 13 linear levels that follow the plot of the film. Each level has bananas to collect, and the main goal is to find idols that open the next part of the level. Interacting with highlighted objects earns curious points, which unlock hats and let you replay minigames and cutscenes. There are four minigames, including a dancing game and a balloon-popping game.

The game was announced in late 2005 and released on February 1, 2006, nine days before the film. In North America it was published by Namco Hometek, and Electronic Arts published it in Europe, where the PlayStation 2 version arrived on December 1, 2006.

Reviews were mixed or average on every platform. The cel-shaded graphics were praised for matching the film, but critics found the controls stiff, the camera hard to control and the levels repetitive.

Notes for collectors

  • Most of the film's voice cast did not record for the game. Only the cutscenes, taken from the film, carry the original voices.
  • Namco wanted Will Ferrell to repeat his role as Ted from the film, but that did not happen.
  • The PlayStation 2 version reached Australia a year after the Game Boy Advance version, in December 2007.
  • The final balloon minigame needs 18 rounds to finish.
