Destiny 2

Overview

Destiny 2 is an online first-person shooter developed by Bungie. The sequel to 2014's Destiny and its expansions, it was released as a paid title in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows, then became a free-to-play live service game under the New Light title on October 1, 2019. It reached PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in December 2020.

Set in a mythic science fiction world, the game is a shared-world multiplayer game with role-playing elements. Activities are split between player versus environment and player versus player. Story missions are joined by three-player strikes and dungeons and six-player raids, and a free-roam patrol mode with public events, Adventures and Lost Sectors. Players are Guardians who wield a power called the Light against alien races and the looming threat of the Darkness.

A sequel was first mentioned in November 2014 and Bungie confirmed in February 2016 that a full sequel would release in 2017. Vicarious Visions joined the development team in December 2016, and a Windows version was confirmed on March 30, 2017. Only a character's appearance carried over from the original game, and only if it had reached level 20 and finished the Black Garden quest. The PlayStation 4 version had timed-exclusive content until the Shadowkeep expansion in October 2019.

Destiny 2 was released worldwide on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 6, 2017. There were several editions: a standard base game, a Limited Edition sold only through GameStop, a Collector's Edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition. The first two expansions, Curse of Osiris (December 5, 2017) and Warmind (May 8, 2018), were followed by Forsaken, Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, Lightfall, The Final Shape, The Edge of Fate and Renegades.

It received generally favorable reviews. Praise went to the gunplay, the exploration focus, the story and the public events, and reviewers were divided on the new weapon categories and the Leviathan raid. It was the second highest-grossing console game of 2017 in North America, behind Call of Duty: WWII, and digital downloads were more than half of total sales.

From the fourth year, Bungie began moving older content into the Destiny Content Vault. The original Red War campaign and raid, and the Curse of Osiris and Warmind expansions, were removed from the game at that point. Bungie later cancelled the two expansions planned for its ninth year, and in September 2026 said it planned to bring the vaulted content back.
