Overview

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is an action game, the first based on DC Comics' Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. It is a tie-in and sequel to the film Green Lantern, which opened in theatres on June 17, 2011. The game has 3D visuals on the Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, using TriOviz Inficolor 3D for ordinary televisions and stereoscopic 3D for 3DTVs.

The player is Hal Jordan, with the power of the Green Lantern ring used to create weapons and objects to defeat enemies and progress. Most versions mix on-foot beat 'em up fights with flying rail shooter sequences. On the Xbox 360 and PS3 the on-foot levels allow full 3D movement from fixed camera angles. These versions also support drop-in, drop-out co-op, where a second player takes control of Sinestro.

The story picks up as the Manhunters, an android race created by the Guardians of the Universe as the first interstellar police force, return seeking revenge. Hal, Kilowog and Sinestro defend Oa, then travel to Zamaron and Biot, home world of the Manhunters. They defeat the Highmaster, and Hal confronts Amon Sur, Abin Sur's son, who has betrayed the Corps.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions use the likeness and voice of Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, the star of the film. Michael Jackson, the radio commentator, returned as Ganthet from the animated film Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. The Nintendo versions have no voice acting. Double Helix Games made the non-Nintendo versions and Griptonite Games the Nintendo ones.

Reviews were mixed. Three major outlets each gave the non-Nintendo versions 60 percent, a 6 out of 10 or 3 out of 5. One of them scored the Wii and DS versions 5.5 and the 3DS version 4.5. The game came out in North America on June 7, 2011, in Europe on June 10 and in Australia on June 29. A separate iOS version plays as a rail shooter and was made by Other Ocean Interactive.
