Overview

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is a 2014 first-person shooter game published by Activision. The eleventh major installment in the Call of Duty series, the game was developed by Sledgehammer Games for PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One, while High Moon Studios developed the versions released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and Raven Software developed the game's multiplayer and the Exo-Zombies mode. It was Sledgehammer's first Call of Duty title as the primary developer.

Advanced Warfare does not use a traditional heads-up display. Information is shown through holographic projections from the equipped weapon. New Exo movements, performed with the exoskeleton, let the player boost, dash and sky jump. The single-player campaign has one playable character, Jack Mitchell, and pays out upgrade points after each mission that go into the Exo suit or weapons. Multiplayer uses the Pick 13 system, an expansion of Black Ops II's Pick 10, along with weapon variants. Exo Survival is a four-player co-op mode, and Exo Zombies arrived with the Havoc DLC.

The campaign starts in 2054, when U.S. Marine Jack Mitchell (Troy Baker) loses his arm in a North Korean invasion of Seoul and takes a job at the private military corporation Atlas, run by Jonathan Irons (Kevin Spacey). A terrorist group called the KVA stages attacks around the world, and Mitchell later learns that Irons let them happen to increase Atlas' power.

Before Advanced Warfare, Sledgehammer was working on a Vietnam War game. Development began in late 2011, shortly before the release of Modern Warfare 3. It was the first Call of Duty since Call of Duty 2 with an engine that was mostly rewritten from scratch, and Activision described the new three-year development cycle as what allowed a near photorealistic world. Harry Gregson-Williams returned to compose the main title theme and audiomachine composed the overall score. Activision confirmed the game would not come to the Wii U, making it the first main Call of Duty without a Nintendo release since Modern Warfare 2 in 2009.

The game was released on 4 November 2014. The Day Zero Edition was released a day early and featured double XP for the first day and two exclusive guns. Four DLC packs followed: Havoc, Ascendance, Supremacy and Reckoning. Each added maps and an Exo Zombies map, and they reached Xbox consoles before PlayStation consoles.

Advanced Warfare received a positive reception and was declared an improvement over Call of Duty: Ghosts. Critics praised the visuals, voice acting, single-player campaign and fast-paced gameplay, but some found the campaign plot predictable. It won several awards and was a commercial success. In Japan it was the best-selling game of its first week, with the PlayStation 3 version selling 79,586 copies and the PlayStation 4 version 64,060.

Notes for collectors

• The Day Zero Edition went on sale a day early, on 3 November 2014.
• High Moon Studios made the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, which are a different build from the PS4 game.
• Microsoft had timed exclusivity on the DLC. The Reckoning release on other platforms ended the deal.
• A 1 TB Xbox One console bundle with a Sentinel Task Force design shipped with a digital copy of the Day Zero Edition.
• The platinum trophy, The End of War, is part of the 51 base game trophies. The four Exo Zombies packs add 40 more.
