Overview

SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs is a 2005 tactical third-person shooter developed by Zipper Interactive and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2. It is the sequel to SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs.

The single-player campaign has 14 missions across five difficulty levels. Three are open at the start, and finishing the game on Commander unlocks Captain, which in turn unlocks Admiral. Every mission has primary, secondary, bonus and crosstalk objectives, and these work with the PSP game SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs: Fireteam Bravo.

The missions take place in North Africa against the North African Patriotic Front, in South Asia against a piracy group called The Fist and Fire, and in Poland against an ultra-nationalist group, the New Slavic Order. The player's fireteam changes in each region, with British Special Boat Service operatives in South Asia and Polish GROM operatives in Poland. The South Asia setting was first Bangladesh but was changed after a complaint from that country's government.

In North America, online play needed players to verify their identity with a credit card, debit card or gift card before they could earn ranks, join friends lists, ranked games or clans. The PAL version did not need this. The first map pack was released on June 27, 2006 for a free two-week trial, and two more packs added maps from the first two SOCOM games. The online servers for this game and the other PlayStation 2 and PSP SOCOM games were shut down on August 31, 2012.
