Overview

Rayman Legends is a 2013 platform game developed by Ubisoft Montpellier and published by Ubisoft. It is the fifth main game in the Rayman series and the direct sequel to Rayman Origins from 2011. It came out for Windows, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Xbox 360 and PlayStation Vita in August and September 2013, and the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions followed on February 18, 2014 in North America.

Up to four players, depending on the format, run through levels at the same time. Lums are collected by touching them, beating enemies or freeing captured Teensies, and rescuing Teensies unlocks new worlds that can be played in any order. Rayman, Globox and the Teensies return, joined by Barbara the Barbarian Princess and her sister and cousins. On Xbox One, Murfy the greenbottle moves on his own and can be prompted to act on certain objects with button controls.

There are over one hundred twenty levels, including forty remastered levels from Rayman Origins, which you unlock with Lucky Tickets. Some levels have remixed Invaded versions that have to be finished fast. Other levels are rhythm-based and are set to covers of songs such as Black Betty, Eye of the Tiger and Woo-Hoo. There are daily and weekly challenge stages with leaderboards, and a local football game called Kung Foot.

A hundred years after Origins, Rayman, Globox and the Teensies have been asleep, while the Bubble Dreamer's nightmares have grown stronger and Barbara and her fellow warrior princesses have been captured. Murfy wakes the heroes and sends them off to end the chaos. After beating each world's boss, they punch the Magician's pieces into space.

Ubisoft announced the game at E3 2012 for Wii U, aiming for the console's launch window. It was delayed to February 2013 and then again to September 2013, when it was made multi-platform. Fans of the Wii U version signed a petition of over 11,000 names against the delay. Michel Ancel directed the game. It uses the UbiArt Framework engine, with a new dynamic lighting system and 3D models for bosses and monsters. On PS4 and Xbox One it uses uncompressed textures and has shorter loading times.

Rayman Legends got critical acclaim. Critics praised the visuals, level design, controls, soundtrack and the amount of content. Sales were slow at launch, though it passed one million copies by November 2013, and Ubisoft counted 4.48 million copies across all platforms as of February 2019.

Daily and weekly online challenges with leaderboards are part of the game. Ubisoft's 2022 list of games losing online services names Rayman Legends on PC only, and the Xbox One version is not on it.

Notes for collectors

• It was announced as a Wii U exclusive and went multi-platform after a delay.
• Forty of the levels are remastered from Rayman Origins.
• Pre-orders of some versions on other platforms came with the bonus character Avelina or bonus costumes for Rayman.
• On the PS4 and Xbox One the costumes that had been bonuses on PS3 and Xbox 360 are available from the start.
• The Xbox One achievement list has 50 entries worth 1,000 gamerscore, and the last seven are tied to the online Challenges.
