Overview

Titanfall 2 is a 2016 first-person shooter developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. It is a sequel to 2014's Titanfall and was released worldwide on 28 October 2016 for PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One. You control Titans, mecha-style machines, and their Pilots, who are agile and carry skills from wall-running to cloaking. The single-player campaign follows Jack Cooper, a rifleman in the Frontier Militia, who bonds with the Titan BT-7274 after his mentor is killed. Together they try to stop the Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation from using a superweapon to destroy the planet Harmony.

Pilots have a jump kit for double-jumping and wall-running, plus new moves such as sliding, a pulse blade, a holo-pilot decoy and a grappling hook. Six Titans were there at launch: Ion, Scorch, Northstar, Ronin, Tone and Legion, with Monarch added in the free Monarch's Reign DLC in May 2017. Unlike the first game, it has a single-player story campaign, with gameplay split between commanding BT-7274 and playing Cooper. Matthew Mercer voices Cooper and Glenn Steinbaum voices BT.

The two-year development cycle began in mid-2014, with a team of about ninety. The campaign was added to widen the player base, since the first game lost its players quickly. Director Steve Fukuda, producer Drew McCoy and composer Stephen Barton returned. The game runs on a heavily modified version of Valve's Source engine, and was declared gold on 29 September 2016.

The Collector's Edition and Vanguard SRS Collector's Edition came out the same day as the standard edition. At E3 2016 Respawn said all updates and downloadable content would be free for everyone. An Ultimate Edition, with the base game, all the updates and some bonus content, was released on 7 July 2017, when the game was added to EA Access.

It received critical acclaim, with praise for the campaign and for the multiplayer building on the first game. It sold below expectations, which was mostly put down to a release between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Since early 2021 the servers for Titanfall 2 and its predecessor have been hit by frequent DDoS attacks that made online play unreliable. Apex Legends, a spin-off, followed in 2019.

• The Xbox One list has 50 achievements worth 1,000 Gamerscore, and only two of them need online play.
• A free Frontier Defense mode lets four players face up to five waves of enemies.
• Players who bought Battlefield 1 and this game got a Titan skin inspired by World War I.
• Buffalo Wild Wings customers and Mountain Dew and Doritos buyers got in-game items through promotions.
• McFarlane Toys made a toy line, including a seven-inch Cooper and a ten-inch BT-7274.
