Overview

Aliens vs. Predator is a 2010 first-person shooter developed by Rebellion Developments and published by Sega for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It is a reboot of the Alien vs. Predator franchise rather than a sequel to Aliens versus Predator 2, and Rebellion had made two earlier games in the series, in 1994 for the Atari Jaguar and in 1999 for Windows.

There are three campaigns, one for each side: the Colonial Marines, the Aliens and the Predators. They play very differently but fit together into one overall story. The Marine campaign is close to a standard shooter, with pulse rifles, flamethrowers, smartguns, flares and a motion tracker. The Alien climbs walls, hides in shadow and fights up close with claws and tail, and can harvest hosts. The Predator stalks from the treetops, has several vision modes, fights with wristblades, a plasma cannon, proximity mines and a throwing disc, and can finish enemies with a trophy kill.

The story starts when a Weyland-Yutani team opens an ancient Predator pyramid on the planet BG 386 while studying captive Aliens. The Aliens escape, a Colonial Marines unit is sent in, and three Predators arrive to investigate. Each campaign follows one of those groups through the same events.

The game was announced in December 2008. Mark Rutherford wrote his first game score for it, about 70 minutes of live orchestral music recorded in Slovakia with the Istropolis Philharmonic Orchestra. Lance Henriksen plays Karl Bishop Weyland. The trophy kills were partly censored to avoid an Adults Only rating in the United States, and an early build was refused classification in Australia in 2009 before Sega won an appeal on December 18, 2009 and released the game uncut.

It came out in North America on February 16, 2010, in Australia on February 18 and in Europe on February 19. Two multiplayer map packs followed, Swarm and Bughunt, each adding multiplayer and survivor maps.

Reviews were mixed on every platform. Critics liked the atmosphere and the multiplayer idea but disliked the melee system, the thin multiplayer compared with Aliens versus Predator 2 and the lack of big set pieces. It still entered the UK all-formats chart at number one and was the fastest-selling game of 2010 in the UK up to that point, and had sold over 1.69 million copies worldwide by May 14, 2010.

Notes for collectors

  • Australia refused the game a rating in 2009. Sega won its appeal on December 18, 2009 and shipped the uncut game with an MA 15+ rating.
  • The Predator trophy kills were partly censored for the United States to avoid an Adults Only rating.
  • IGN scored it 8.5 out of 10 in the UK and 7 out of 10 in the US.
  • The PS3 disc has one North American ID, BLUS30340, and two European IDs, BLES00585 and BLES00586. The two European IDs have different 01.01 patch sizes.
  • The trophy list has 50 trophies and no DLC trophy packs. Several need ranked online matches, including Welcome to The Party (6,000 XP) and Real Nasty Habit (18,060 XP).
  • Mark Rutherford made his own percussion by scraping and hitting metal and tools to get a sound for the Alien and the Predator.
