Overview

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is a 2010 action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the third major game in the Assassin's Creed series and the second chapter of the Ezio Trilogy, a direct sequel to Assassin's Creed II. It came out for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November 2010, and for Windows in March 2011.

The story is a fictional history of real events. Desmond Miles uses the Animus to relive the memories of his ancestor Ezio Auditore da Firenze and tries to find a way to stop the 2012 apocalypse. The main story takes place during the Italian Wars between 1500 and 1507 and picks up where Assassin's Creed II ended. Ezio takes the fight against the Templars, led by the Borgia family, to Rome, where he rebuilds the Assassin Brotherhood and tries to free the city from the Borgias.

It is an open world game played in third person, built around climbing, stealth and combat. You can explore Rome freely or do side missions, and for the first time Desmond can leave the Animus almost any time to explore Monteriggioni. The campaign is estimated at over 15 hours. It is the first main game in the series with multiplayer, where you play Templars in training in an Abstergo facility, with eight game modes, a levelling system, and unlockable abilities, perks and streaks.

Ubisoft Montreal led development, with help from Ubisoft studios in Annecy, Singapore, Bucharest and Quebec City, and Annecy built most of the multiplayer. The game was announced in Ubisoft's fiscal third quarter results in 2009 and was shown at E3 2010 with a PlayStation 3 exclusive multiplayer beta that ran from October 4 to October 18, 2010. It was not numbered because it continues Ezio's story rather than starting a new setting. The game went gold on October 28, 2010. Jesper Kyd composed the music.

It was released in North America on November 16, 2010, in Australia on November 18 and in Europe on November 19. All PS3 versions came with a free exclusive download, the Copernicus Conspiracy. Retail editions varied by region and retailer, and a Da Vinci Edition with The Da Vinci Disappearance followed for consoles in March 2011.

Reviews were excellent. Metacritic scores were 90 for the PS3 version and 89 for the Xbox 360 version. The multiplayer was a hit at E3 2010, where GameTrailers named it Best Multiplayer Game of the show. The story was seen as weaker than Assassin's Creed II. It won the BAFTA for Best Action Game and Best Action Adventure at the Spike TV Video Game Awards 2010, and passed one million sales in under a week. Ubisoft said it had shipped 7.2 million copies by May 2011.
