Assassin's Creed Rogue

Overview

Assassin's Creed Rogue is a 2014 action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Sofia and published by Ubisoft. It is the seventh major installment of the series and is set alongside Assassin's Creed III and after Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. It came out on the same day as Assassin's Creed Unity, and it is the last Assassin's Creed made for the seventh generation of consoles, arriving on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November 2014 and on Windows in March 2015.

You play Shay Patrick Cormac, an Irish American privateer and Assassin who becomes disillusioned with the Brotherhood's tactics, joins the Templars and hunts his former comrades. The main story runs from 1752 to 1760, before and during the French and Indian War. The modern day frame has you working as an employee of Abstergo Industries, fixing the company's servers while you uncover secrets about the Assassin and Templar conflict.

Gameplay is very close to Black Flag, mixing ship-based naval exploration with third person movement on land. The map covers the western North Atlantic around the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, a fictional River Valley and New York City. Shay's ship, the Morrigan, sits lower in the water than the Jackdaw so it can travel rivers, and it can carry Puckle guns, oil slicks and an icebreaker. There is an air rifle for silent ranged takedowns, a grenade launcher attachment, and a new Assassin Interception side mission in which you stop Assassins from carrying out a contract.

Development was announced on August 5, 2014 after the title leaked, following earlier reports of a project code-named Comet. Game director Martin Capel described it as the conclusion of the series' North American saga, designed to answer fan requests such as playing a Templar. Ubisoft Sofia led with help from several other Ubisoft studios, and the game was made without a multiplayer mode.

Rogue was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2014 in North America, November 13 in most other regions and November 14 in the United Kingdom. The Collector's Edition includes a collector's box, the soundtrack and artbook, three lithographs and two exclusive missions. Four content packs added weapons and customization, and they were later collected as the Templar Legacy Pack on January 13, 2015. A remastered version followed on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in March 2018.

Reviews were mixed. Critics liked the twist of playing a Templar, the story, the protagonist and the naval combat, and criticized the lack of new ideas, the short length and how much it borrows from Black Flag. Ubisoft reported 10 million copies shipped of Rogue and Unity combined by the end of 2014.

Notes for collectors

• It is the last Assassin's Creed made for PS3 and Xbox 360, and it launched the same week as Assassin's Creed Unity.
• Underwater diving missions from Black Flag were cut because the cold North Atlantic drains your health. Shay can only swim freely in the warmer River Valley.
• The ship and the hero share a theme: Cormac is a Gaelic name meaning raven, and the Morrigan is an Irish war goddess often shown as a raven.
• Four trophies need one particular in-game cheat to be the only one active: Hunt the hunted, I ENDURE, Supplier and Killing Machine.
• None of the 47 trophies need an online connection.
• The Artbook Edition was PC only; consoles got the standard, Limited and Collector's editions.
