Overview

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is a 2010 first-person shooter developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with mobile versions later. It is a direct sequel to Battlefield: Bad Company and the ninth installment in the Battlefield series. It was released worldwide in March 2010.

It is a squad-based shooter in a modern war setting. In the single player campaign you play Preston Marlowe from the first game, with his squad, trying to stop a Russian super-weapon. The Frostbite 1.5 engine allows destructible environments, and the multiplayer maps support five game modes with a wide choice of vehicles, aircraft and emplacements.

Players can drive ATVs, APCs, tanks and helicopters, and on foot they carry real-world small arms. Bad Company 2 emphasizes destruction: large parts of most buildings can be blown up and some walls and fences break under gunfire. It uses regenerating health, and the Medic kit speeds up regeneration instead of restoring health directly.

DICE announced the game in February 2009. After Infinity Ward said Modern Warfare 2 would not have dedicated servers, DICE announced on Twitter that Bad Company 2 would. A multiplayer demo for the Xbox 360 and a closed beta on PC ran from January 28, 2010, and the PS3 demo followed on February 4, 2010. Mikael Karlsson composed the score.

It was sold in a Limited Edition, which gave early access to weapons and vehicle perks, and later in the Ultimate Edition, released on August 31, 2010 for Xbox 360 and PS3. Seven VIP map packs, a cooperative mode called Onslaught, and a Vietnam expansion followed. The VIP pass became free for all Xbox 360 and PS3 users on May 30, 2013.

Reviews were positive: the review aggregate was 88 out of 100 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions and 87 for the PC version. It sold more than 12 million copies by March 2012. EA announced on March 21, 2023 that the game would be removed from digital stores, with the campaign staying playable.

Notes for collectors

• The PS3 patch is large, about 1.8 GB, and two separate North American disc IDs exist.
• The Ultimate Edition bundles Battlefield 1943 with the main game, so one disc has two games.
• About 42 of the 73 trophies are online or multiplayer trophies, and the online servers closed on December 8, 2023. The campaign trophies still work offline.
• In North America the Xbox 360 had a Dr Pepper promotion with unlock codes on bottles. It was Xbox 360 only.
• Vietnam is sold as a retail package that only contains a product key for internet activation.
• Players with two or more Battlefield games registered with EA, or members of the EA Gun Club, got the M1 Garand through the Battlefield Veterans program.
• The PC version was co-developed with the Swedish studio Coldwood Interactive.
