Overview

Killzone 2 is a 2009 first-person shooter developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. It is the second main game in the Killzone series, following the original Killzone from 2004. It takes place in the 24th century and tells of a war between two human factions, the Vektans and the Helghast. The game is set two years after the first Killzone, and follows Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko as he and his unit fight the Helghast while the Vektans invade the Helghast homeworld. Jan Templar, the hero of Killzone and Killzone: Liberation, returns in a supporting role along with Rico Velasquez.

The game is played almost entirely from a first person view, apart from short stretches of vehicle combat. It has a lean and peek cover system, and the player drives a tank and an exoskeleton at two points in the campaign. Motion control from the Sixaxis is used for actions such as turning a valve, arming a charge and sniping. The online mode is called Warzone. It is class based, with seven classes, 15 weapons and ranks that unlock new gear. Matches flow through several game types in a single round, and the team that wins the most of them takes the match.

In the story, the Vektan ISA bombards the Helghast capital Pyrrhus and then lands a ground assault toward the Imperial Palace. Colonel Mael Radec, commander of the Second Army, switches on a network of arc towers hidden under the city and halts the advance. Alpha Squad then learns that the towers run on Petrusite, a mineral that can generate and channel electricity. The campaign ends at the palace, where Radec and his guard are beaten and Emperor Visari is killed.

Sony announced the game at E3 2005 with a trailer that was later admitted to be a target render, a pre-rendered video showing what the team hoped to reach. A real-time trailer followed at E3 2007. The engine uses deferred shading, which gives close control of lighting. The score was written by Joris de Man, with about 30 minutes of live orchestra recorded at Abbey Road Studios, and it won the first Ivor Novello Award given to a game soundtrack.

A private beta ran for some North American and European PlayStation Network subscribers, and a single player demo reached the European store on 5 February 2009. The game came out in Europe on 25 February 2009, in Australia on 26 February and in North America on 27 February. Three multiplayer map packs followed, Steel and Titanium, Flash and Thunder, and Napalm and Cordite. Each pack added two maps and a set of its own trophies, and a bundle later sold all six maps together. The servers for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 were shut down on 29 March 2018.

Reviews were very strong, with a Metacritic score of 91 on PS3. Critics praised the graphics, presentation, action and multiplayer, and criticised the story and characters. In the United States the game sold 323,000 copies in its first 48 hours, and Sony said it passed one million worldwide by 16 April 2009. It led to Killzone 3, released in February 2011.

Notes for collectors

  • The 2005 reveal trailer was a target render, not real gameplay, which started a long argument at the time about whether the PS3 could look like that.
  • A pre-order from a US retailer came with a demo card, and the single player demo went up on the US store on 26 February 2009.
  • The online trophies, including the weekly honor rank ones and the Platinum, relied on Sony's servers, which closed in March 2018.
  • Steel & Titanium and Flash & Thunder have 12 trophies each and Napalm & Cordite has 8, so the full list with DLC is 84 trophies.
  • The Flamethrower and Boltgun only appear in multiplayer on the two Napalm & Cordite maps.
  • The Japanese release came about two months after the PAL and North American ones, on 23 April 2009.
