Overview

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a 2009 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. It is the second game in the Uncharted series. Set two years after Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the story follows Nathan Drake, Chloe Frazer and Elena Fisher as they search for the Cintamani Stone and the lost city of Shambhala while fighting a militia led by the Serbian war criminal Zoran Lazarevic.

Drake can jump, climb and scale narrow ledges, carry up to two firearms and grenades, take cover, and use stealth to sneak up on enemies. There are 100 treasures and one secret relic to find, and collecting them and completing feats earns medals that pay for extras on the disc. Competitive multiplayer supports up to ten players in two teams of five, with modes such as Deathmatch, Plunder, Elimination, Turf War, King of the Hill and Chain Reaction. Co-op supports three players in missions plus the Gold Rush, Survival and Siege modes.

The story opens in medias res with a wounded Drake on a hanging train car, then tells how he got there. It begins with a heist in Istanbul to steal an oil lamp tied to Marco Polo's lost fleet and moves through Borneo, Nepal and the Himalayas.

Development started right after Drake's Fortune and took 22 months, six of them in pre-production. The team drew on the explorer Marco Polo and his travels. Naughty Dog built Naughty Engine 2.0, which allowed far more motion captured scenes, with 564 in-game cinematic animations against 80 in the first game. Head writer Amy Hennig worked with Neil Druckmann and Josh Scherr. The game was first shown by Game Informer in December 2008. It uses all of a single Blu-ray Disc and needs no install.

It was released in North America on 13 October 2009, in Australia on 15 October and in Europe on 16 October. The PAL region got a SteelBook Special Edition, and a Game of the Year Edition with all the DLC except the Sidekick Skin Pack came out on 12 October 2010. The multiplayer servers were terminated on 3 September 2019. The game later appeared in Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection for PS4 in 2015, without multiplayer.

Reviewers gave it universal acclaim. Metacritic lists the PS3 version at 96 out of 100, with 41 perfect scores, making it the most acclaimed game of 2009. It won more than 200 Game of the Year awards, including at the Spike Video Game Awards. It sold 537,000 copies in the US in October 2009, passed one million by 12 November 2009 and 6.5 million by March 2015.

Notes for collectors

• The game needs no install. It fills a single Blu-ray Disc.
• The Fortune Hunter Edition was never sold. Only 200 copies were made, given away to US players through the PlayStation Blog, PlayStation Home and other contests.
• The PAL Special Edition comes in a SteelBook and was found on the game's European launch site.
• The first multiplayer beta was bundled with inFamous copies and was also open to annual PlayStation Network Qore subscribers.
• The Game of the Year Edition leaves out the Sidekick Skin Pack.
• Two DLC packs added trophies (12 in February 2010 and 11 with Siege), so the trophy list on a fully patched game is longer than the disc's.
• Multiplayer ended on 3 September 2019, so the online trophies can no longer be earned on a stock console.
