Overview

Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2011 is a hunting game published by Activision together with Cabela's. It came out for Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, iOS and Wii. In the United States it was released on October 26, 2010 for the DS, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii, and it reached Europe and Australia in 2011.

The story follows Cole Rainsford, who travels with his father to Africa to hunt dangerous possessed animals that are terrorizing locals. The plot and script were written by screenwriter Brad Santos. On the home consoles it opens in 1982 in a cave in Uganda, then in 2001 in Alaska, where Cole loses his brother Adrian to a pack of wolves with glowing red eyes, and jumps to Cole as a grown professional hunter who goes back to Uganda to look for the Kaftar, a creature believed to control animals.

Along the way Cole hunts a grizzly, a rhino, baboons, hyenas and other animals, and finds an abandoned research facility called the Nightfall Program. The game also has shooting galleries and multi-level multiplayer modes. It works with PlayStation Move.

Special editions for PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii were released the same day, bundled with the Top Shot Elite wireless hunting controller. The Wii also got a re-release called Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2011: Special Edition with an optional cell-shaded animation mode.

Critics gave it mixed reviews. Previews called it a survival game first and a hunting game second, and compared its feel to Resident Evil because of the large wolves and the sensitive controls. A preview also praised the Top Shot Elite for its smooth handling and its infrared scope. The change of numbering in the series from sequel numbers to years drew a comparison to Madden NFL.

Notes for collectors

• The PS3 trophy list is 20 trophies with a Platinum, 8 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze, and it has no DLC packs.
• Most trophies are for Story Mode and the Shooting Gallery levels. Collector's Edition needs every Experience Item and Marksman Target in Story Mode, and I Will Survive means lasting more than 7 minutes in the Night Fangs survival gallery.
• The Top Shot Elite bundle was released the same day as the standard game, October 26, 2010. The game also works with PlayStation Move.
• The DS and iOS versions tell a different story, about a pride of man-eating lions on Samson Rainsford's estate.
• The only PS3 disc ID found is the European one, BLES01112.
