Overview

Crysis 2 is a first-person shooter developed by Crytek and published by Electronic Arts. It was released in March 2011 for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and it is the second main game in the Crysis series after Crysis and its expansion Crysis Warhead. Richard Morgan wrote the story, and it was the first game to show off the CryEngine 3 engine and the first on that engine to reach consoles.

You play Alcatraz, a Force Recon Marine who ends up wearing the Nanosuit 2.0 after Prophet from the first game gives it up. The suit's old Strength and Speed modes were merged into one Power mode, and the cloak, now Stealth mode, allows silent melee kills. Instead of the jungle of the first game, the setting is a ruined and evacuated New York City, and the Ceph aliens were redesigned as armoured humanoid war machines.

It takes place in 2023, three years after the first game. A virus is liquefying people in Manhattan, the city is under martial law, and the private military contractor CELL hunts Alcatraz because it thinks he is Prophet. The campaign takes you from the submarine crash through Wall Street, Grand Central, Times Square and Roosevelt Island to a final fight over Central Park.

Crysis 2 was announced at E3 2009 and had been in development since 2007, with help from Crytek UK. A build from January 2011 leaked in February, before launch. A multiplayer demo went up on the PlayStation Network on March 15, 2011 and was pulled three days later because of server connection problems. EA sold a Limited Edition, and a Nano Edition with a statue, art book and Nanosuit backpack.

After launch came two multiplayer map packs: Retaliation on May 18, 2011 with four maps, and Decimation with five maps, which reached PS3 on June 28, 2011 in North America. The music was by Borislav Slavov and Tilman Sillescu with Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe.

Reviews were positive, with Metacritic scores of 85 for PS3, 84 for Xbox 360 and 86 for PC. Critics praised the visuals and the Nanosuit and criticised the linear levels compared with the open first game. Over three million copies were sold across platforms by June 30, 2011. A remastered version came to PS4, Xbox One, Switch and Windows in October 2021.

Notes for collectors

  • A build from January 2011 leaked online in February 2011, about six weeks before release.
  • The PSN multiplayer demo went up on March 15, 2011 and was pulled on March 18 because of server connection problems.
  • The Nano Edition was pre-order only at $149.95 and sold out before March 2011. Shipments were delayed, and EA gave affected customers a 75 percent off coupon and later a free digital copy of the Limited Edition.
  • Decimation reached PS3 about two weeks after Xbox 360 and PC, on June 28 in North America and June 29 in Europe.
  • The game did not use EA's online pass.
  • Peter Watts wrote a novel adaptation of the game.
  • About 1.5 percent of players hold the Platinum, and several of the gold and silver trophies are tied to multiplayer ranks and unlocks.
